Actress HALLE BERRY has been forced to issue a public apology after making an apparent anti-Semitic joke on THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO.

During the taping for Friday’s show (19Oct07), the Oscar-winning star was showing Leno distorted images of herself on a computer, when she said: “Here’s where I look like my Jewish cousin!” as a picture of her with a large nose appeared. When the joke received no laughs from the audience, Leno quipped, “I’m glad you said that and not me” - Berry requested the footage be scrapped. However, an audience member tells New York gossip column, PageSix, “Ms. Berry should know how unbelievably inappropriate her comment was. She should be ashamed of herself.” But Berry insists she did not intend to cause offence. She says, “I so didn’t mean to offend anybody - and after the show I realised it could be seen as offensive, so I asked Jay to take it out, and he did. “What happened was I was backstage before the show and I have three girls who are Jewish who work for me. We were going through pictures to see which ones looked silly, and one of my Jewish friends said (of the big-nose picture), ‘That could be your Jewish cousin!’ And I guess it was fresh in my mind, and it just came out of my mouth. But I didn’t mean to offend anybody. I didn’t. I didn’t mean any harm.” The scene was cut from the show.

Halle Berry says race remains a major issue in Hollywood casting.

The star has accused film studios of making it more difficult for her to find rules because of the colour of her skin.

Berry, 41, has won a best actress Oscar and Silver Bear for Monster’s Ball, a Golden Globe and Emmy for her role in Introducing Dorothy Dandridge and countless other awards, but she says this matters little to those with the power to decide who will be the star.

“I shouldn’t have had to try so hard to be considered,” she said in an interview with the Reuters news agency.

“I should have to stop convincing studios I am right for it - it should be on my acting merit.

“Not having a chance is what I can’t live with at this point in my career, I think I have earned that,” she added.

Berry is pregnant with her first child and as such faces a voluntary layoff for now.

But she will soon be back on cinema screens as Audrey Burke in Things We Lost in The Fire, in which she plays a widowed woman with two children who invites her husband’s best friend to live with the bereaved family.

Halle Berry is so superstitious she has kept the 334 negative pregnancy tests she took before one proved she was with child.

The Oscar winner instinctively knew she was a mum-to-be but at home tests left her bewildered. But she refused to throw the negative “sticks” out. She says, “We’d been trying for a while and I’m sort of superstitious so I saved all the negative tests in, like, a drawer… I don’t know why but I did.”

Now that she has finally announced her pregnancy, Halle Berry has got into mommy mode. She was recently spotted shopping for baby clothes with her mother, Judith Ann.
Dressed in a short white dress, the three-months-pregnant former Bond babe and her mom laughed and talked as they hit up at a baby boutique in West Hollywood.
Meanwhile, it was recently announced that soul singer Aretha Franklin has Halle in mind to portray her in an upcoming biopic From These Roots.

“I have an interest in Halle Berry possibly doing it,” said Aretha. But with a baby on board, it’s questionable whether or not Halle would be willing to take on a new role.

Halle Berry is pregnant, she confirmed exclusively to Access Hollywood’s Nancy O’Dell.The 41-year-old actress revealed the news in an e-mail to Nancy on Tuesday that she is three months pregnant with boyfriend Gabriel Aubry’s baby.

“Yes, I am three months pregnant! Gabriel and I are beyond excited, and I’ve waited a long time for this moment in life. Now the next seven months will be the longest of my life!” she wrote to Nancy. “Can’t wait to see you and give you a squeeze and see a pic of your little sweetie. Until then, you heard it from ME first!”

Upon hearing the news, Nancy was elated for her good friend.
“I am beyond ecstatic for my friend Halle! I told her she is about to embark on the best time of her life! She is such a sweet person…so genuine…and therefore, will make an incredible mom. And can you imagine how gorgeous this baby is gonna be! Halle sent me the most adorable bunch of clothes for my new baby…I can’t wait to do the same for her,” Nancy said.

Over the years, Halle has made no secret about her desire for a family. Back in April, Nancy and Halle sat down for a candid talk about Halle’s plans for kids.

“Not that there’s not more to accomplish, but I think I arrived at a point in life that I realized I needed more to get me up in the morning. More than going to a new movie set. Or as much fun as getting the star was yesterday, I need something even more profound than that and that’s family. And that’s children,” Halle said. ” I need that like the air to breathe these days and I’m ready. I’m at a point where I’m really, really ready.”

Halle Berry has been outspoken about her future plans for a child. She told Oprah Winfrey she wanted a baby before she was 40.

She’s also often quoted as saying she wants a biological baby and that she’s considering adoption too, “I probably will adopt even if it does happen naturally.”
